WE CAN GO ON CUP RUN

McGhee desperate to dump Rangers

- Michael Temlett

Motherwe l l ’ s Mark McGhee and Carl McHugh admit there is nothing they’d enjoy more this year than Scottish Cup success.

The Steelmen are Ibroxbound on Saturday for a Scottish Cup fourth round clash with Mark Warburton’s Rangers. The last time the two sides met, Well had a point snatched from them as Kenny Miller netted a lastminute winner. This time round, Irishman McHugh is looking to play a part in a victory overr the Glasgow outfit and would love to be part of a Motherwell Scottish Cup win.

The game against Rangers is the first in a double-header. McGhee’s men will welcome the Ibrox men to Fir Park for a league clash the following weekend.

McHugh said: “A cup run would be great. We have to aim for that – but we’ve got two very tough games against Rangers.

“We’ve enjoyed our break and we go into the game with loads of confidence thanks to our two results before (beating Inverness and drawing against Hamilton).

“I can’t wait for the game, but I’m just d delighted to be back playing again now.

“Going to the big grounds with big c crowds and playing the big clubs, it will b be a great experience.”

Motherwell sit ninth in the P Premiership table – four points above Hamilton in a relegation play-off spot.

But manager Mark McGhee insists the focus is now on a cup run – and he would love to restart the season with a win over Rangers.

He said: “We’re very optimistic about the second half of the season and we’ve got a great game to come back to against Rangers at Ibrox. We’re hoping

for a cup run all the way to the final. We’re in a good frame of mind and we’ve got Lasley and Hammell to come back as well.

“We’ve had a chance to have a good look at the squad during the break.”

McHugh returned to action after a four-month lay-off due to concussion suffered before the winter shutdown began. Now the Well midfielder believes his work over the break will help him reach full fitness.

He said: “Getting through the two 90 minutes before the break was a good yardstick and I don’t think I’m miles away. The more games you play, you get that match fitness back.

“I’ll improve game on game and my aim is to help the team out behind now and the end of the season. The boys who played the majority of the games had a week off but I was in with Andy Boles.

“The training we do is brilliant and everything is very measured and calculated.”
