A study found that children’s health in Scotland is among the worst in western Europe.

The State of Child Health - Scotland report found that 28 per cent of kids were either overweight or obese with some experts calling on the Scottish Government to do more to tackle the problem. But what about the children themselves? We spoke to pupils at Stane Primary School in Shotts to find out their thoughts on the issue as they had been taking part in a healthy living week at school.

Eleven-year-old Ewan Mitchell said: “We have been testing varieties of fizzy drinks to find out how much sugar there is in.

“I have enjoyed learning about eating more healthily.”

Ewan’s classmate, 10-year-old Eve Keir, also highlighted the large amount of sugar going into fizzy drinks.

She added: “I think it’s important that we know what is in our food and drink.”

Meanwhile, Ryan Walker, 12, is hoping more people his age get out doing more sporting activities.

He said: “We have tried out a lot of new sports over the past week.

“I think that it’s important to play as much sport as you can.”

Finally, 10-year-old Lucie Gardner said: “I have learned how to restart someone’s heart and make sure they are in the recovery position.

“People should know how to do First Aid.”
