New schools campus plan confirmed

-

A new joint campus for Newmains and St Brigid’s Primary schools was given the go ahead by councillors following Thursday’s budget.

The confirmation of the new multi-million pound campus, set to be built on land near to the current St Brigid’s Primary School, comes after years of campaigning for better schools in the area.

Newmains councillor Robert McKendrick was delighted the new schools have finally been given the green light. He said:“I’m absolutely delighted.

“Our children and grandchildren will be educated in a modern building with proper nursery provision, modern sporting facilities and most importantly a whole new safe environment for all children.”

It was also confirmed that a review into the Morningside Primary building will be held in due course.

Council leader Jim Logue, who himself was criticised by Councillor McKendrick over the failure to provide new schools back in 2014, was pleased to see the schools being confirmed and described the building of the new campus as “unfinished business”for the council.

He said:“There’s £53million in schools with six new schools being built. In terms of Newmains, there was a need for new schools and it was in a previous programme but the difficulty was that a section of the land wasn’t owned by the council. It took time to resolve that.

“Robert’s a very determined individual but as soon as all the legal side of it was concluded , we thought Yes. It was unfinished business for us.”
