Juniors start gold rush in the ring Wins at the School and Junior Championships

- Michael Temlett

It has been another busy but successful weekend for the region’s boxers at the School and Junior Championships.

Youngsters from across the country descended on Ravenscraig on Saturday and Sunday for the championships with several local talents scooping gold medals.

There were eight golds from local clubs with one more potentially coming next Saturday after the final bouts.

Kian Pearson from Cambusnethan, Springhill duo Reese Lynch and Terry Sample and five boxers from Keir Hardie ABC made up the winners.

Dillan Mackie, Marcus McKenzie, Ryan Carlin, Stephen Black and Jamie Stodart were all victorious for the Newarthill club.

But the success did not stop there for our clubs with silver medals for three Cleland Miners youngsters.

Kieran Docherty, Lloyd Delaney and Taylor Gray all grabbed silver for the club.

Cleland Miners coach Ronnie Blackburn said: “It just wasn’t to be but all three boys boxed brilliant and gave it their all.

“That’s all you can ask for and everyone at the club is proud of them.”

Springhill may be awaiting more success as Marcus Sutherland is set to box in the final of the 34kg category on Saturday.

The Shotts club also had Ryan Duffy and Sam Allan but they were unfortunate as they lost out in their semi-final bouts.

Springhill head coach Frank Delaney said: “Terry and Reese were brilliant and deserved their golds and hopefully Marcus can do it next week.

“I was happy with how everyone boxed and it was also unfortunate for Shaira Robertson as there were no opponents for her.”

Shire’s Krissy Slowey also grabbed a silver as he lost out to Brodie Grant from Lochend ABC in the 63kg final.
