IT’S ALL OVER FOR McGHEE

McGhee feels the strain during the 5-1 defeat against Dundee on Saturday

Aberdeen player guiding the Steelmen to a top-six finish after taking over from Ian Baraclough.

However, McGhee has endured a torrid year so far, having suffered early cup exits and one win in the last eight.

The statement read: “Motherwell Football Club has parted company with manager Mark McGhee.

“The decision taken by the Board following consultation with the Well Society, comes after a disappointing run of results, culminating in Saturday’s loss at home to Dundee.

“Stephen Robinson, flanked by assistant James McFadden and under20s coach Stephen Craigan, have agreed to take temporary charge whilst a new permanent manager is recruited as swiftly as possible.

“The club wishes to thank Mark for his work during his second spell at Fir Park, particularly getting the club into the top-six during the 2015/ 16 season and wish him every success in the future.”

Robinson is the 3/1 favourite for the job, while ex-Motherwell player Simo Valakari is second favourite at 4/1.

Valakari was interviewed for the job after Baraclough was sacked but Motherwell chiefs elected for McGhee.

The Finnish international midfielder was fired by SJK two weeks ago.

Morton boss Jim Duffy is also said to be interested in the role.

Supporter Andy Ross, from MFC Podcast, said: “Saturday was the final nail in McGhee’s coffin for even the most level-headed supporters.

“When there are protests going on during the game, you know it’s hard to come back from that.

“I wouldn’t mind seeing Robinson get the job because he knows the club inside out but the next few weeks are huge.”
