Wishaw schools miss mark on Highers

- Lynn Love

Every high school in Wishaw failed to meet the exam benchmark set by education bosses.

St Aidan’s, Coltness and Clyde Valley high schools did not reach their target for pupils to leave school with three or more Highers.

The figures, compiled by Education Scotland, identified the best and worst performing schools, and were released individually by the Scottish Government for each school earlier this month.

St Aidan’s High School did not meet their 48 per cent target, with only 46 per cent managing the feet.

Coltness High School only received 44 per cent of their 47 per cent target.

And at Clyde Valley High only 37 per cent of students left with three or more Highers, causing them to narrowly miss out on hitting their 38 per cent target.

However, several high schools in Motherwell and Shotts proved that the targets set out are achievable.

Dalziel High School smashed their 54 per cent target with 61 per cent of pupils leaving schools with three or more Highers.

Over half of pupils at Our Lady’s High left school with three Highers under their belt, meaning the school broke their 50 per cent target by hitting 56 per cent.

Fifty-one per cent of pupils at Taylor High School achieved pass marks in three or more highers, smashing their 47 benchmark.

Another school who impressed with their results is Calderhead High.

The Shotts school saw 38 per cent of their students leave with three or more Highers outdoing their 36 per cent benchmark.

Braidhurst and Brannock High both missed out on their targets.

The tables released also showed the number of pupils at the schools from impoverished backgrounds, based on how many pupils at the school come from areas that are included in level one of the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation.

Figures showed a staggering 45 per cent of pupils at Clyde Valley High school are living in poverty.Thirty-nine per cent of students at St Aidan’s are from impoverished backgrounds and 27 per cent at Coltness High School.

North Lanarkshire Council didn’t provide a comment as we reached our deadline.
