Priory’s hit by vandals

Group blasts graffitti neds

- Michael Temlett

Mindless vandals have been slammed af ter targeting Ca m b u s n e t h a n Priory.

The attacks have seen the historic building littered with graffiti spelling out names such as ‘Hammy’, ‘Chuck’, ‘Ash’ and ‘JYT’.

Chairman of the Friends of Cambusnethan Priory group, Graham Smith, blasted the attacks and hopes anyone who can bring the culprits to task will speak out.

Graham said: “It’s a real kick in the teeth to everyone who has been working hard since we created the group back in 2014.

“We’ve been trying to restore Cambusnethan Priory to its former glory and people are backing us all the way but you can get some mindless individuals who ruin it.

“Thankfully we’ve got stonemasons who can help remove the graffiti but they shouldn’t have to waste their time.

“I know this will no doubt make the culprits feel even more notorious, but I’m hoping someone knows them and will report them.

“There was a two-week window where this could have happened and it’s just a shame to see a lot of hard work going to waste.”

In March 2014, the Friends of Cambusnethan Priory was established, with the aim of saving the building from further d e t e r i o rat i o n and eventually restoring it as a multi-purpose visitor centre for the community.

Last August, members of the public came out to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the historic building.

However, defiant Graham won’t let the vandals ruin the hard work of the Cambusnethan Priory group.

He added: “We won’t let an incident like this set us back and hopefully we have some exciting times ahead of us.

“The group are always working hard to try and get more backing from the public so hopefully they can help out again.”
