stayed in the tower for 25 years but feels concerned after last week’s blaze.

She said: “You see something terrible like the fire in London happening and it scares you.

“I’m on the 16th floor because I had concerns about break-ins and noise so didn’t want to be on the first couple of floors.

“We need reassurance from the council and I think they should be coming round and carrying out a full safety check.

“I’ve always felt safe until now.”

Tam Smith, who is a 14th floor resident at Allershaw Tower in Gowkthrapple, said: “I know the alarms are checked frequently and the smoke detectors are really sensitive but I think that fire shows you couldn’t stop it even with them.

“You would never think that the type of cladding would be the reason behind a big fire like that, so it’s important to make sure there’s nothing else similar which could lead to another disaster.”

Janet MacDona l d recently moved from a bungalow in England to Muirhouse Tower and she admits she got a fright after last week’s heartbreaking fire.

She said: “My thoughts go out to everyone involved because it’s terrible.

“But after watching it you feel strange because you can’t help but think that it could have been us.

“It’s my first time living in a tower block and I think a lot of people are quite concerned.”

Maria McAleavey from Allershaw Tower added: “I feel safe because this building is well monitored by the caretaker and whenever you have a problem they will be quick to act.

“Obviously, they can only do what’s possible under the circumstances but I don’t feel any less safe than I did before seeing the news.”

A meeting was due to take place last night ( Tuesday) at Muirhouse Tower where North Lanarkshire Council would explain safety procedures and the fire equipment within the building.
