GUESS THE TEACHER

The mathematics department were running a Guess the Teacher Competition with all the proceeds going to Mary’s Meals. The competition saw pupils in the lower school trying to identify a teacher from a picture when they were younger, the picture was placed on a co-ordinate diagram.

This competition was part of the ongoing drive to promote numeracy across the school. Local traders Indian Delight Takeaway and Tao Chinese Takeaway sponsored the event.

Mr Mark Dorris, Principal Teacher of Mathematics, was delighted with the response from the pupils raising a total of £200 for Mary’s Meals. CARITAS AWARD

19 of the S6 students successfully completed the Pope Benedict XVI Caritas Award. This involved undertaking works of service in their school, parish or faith community. Students were involved in fundraising for charity, helping, buddying and tutoring first year pupils, taking active roles in the liturgy and a variety of other activities. The students attended the award ceremony in the Clyde Auditorium in Glasgow. At the ceremony the young people were presented with their medals and certificates by guests invited by the Scottish Catholic Education Service. The school said the students have been a credit to themselves, their families and the school throughout the year and deserved their day in the spotlight. UNDER 14S LEAGUE FINAL TAYLOR 4 – 4 CALDERVALE (TAYLOR WIN 5-4 ON PENALTIES)

Taylor U14s made it to the final beating fierce opponents in the league such as St Andrew’s, St Ambrose, Dalziel and others. Taylor’s league section finished with Taylor and Our Lady’s High of Motherwell on even points. A convincing 3-0 win in the play-off match between the two saw Taylor in to the Semi-Finals of the League. Against Cathkin High, Taylor progressed to the final with a 4-1 victory. Against a very physical opponent in Caldervale High, Taylor struggled to get a foot hold in the match Taylor were under large periods of pressure and failed to link up when in possession. Caldervale took the lead and in quick succession made it 3-0 with only 15 minutes having been played. Taylor spirits were low. A long ball over the top allowed the lightening quick Lewis Wales to sprint past the defence and assist Kyle Lafferty and it was 3 – 1. Despite more possession, Taylor were being out muscled on the pitch and before half-time found themselves 4-1 down. With the introduction of Robbie Murray, Taylor came out in the second half looking determined and focused. Taylor had settled well into the early stages of the half and created more chances, the speed of Kyle Lafferty and Lewis Wales were a force to be reckoned with. Dario Alemanno was moved to left midfield to use his speed and this paid off as he calmly slotted home after breaking through a very high line of Caldervale defenders.

Taylor continued to dominate and created more chances as the game progressed into the latter stages. Kieran Watters, Jack Foster and Callum Wright coped incredibly well with any Caldervale attacks. With only 10 minutes to go and requiring two goals it looked like the Taylor efforts would be in vain. However, Taylor had other ideas. A scrappy goal chance fell to Robbie Murray who converted the chance. 4-3 and only minutes to play. Ben Miller had the chance with a free-kick which shaved the crossbar. Then, with the last touch of the ball, Robbie Murray sent home the equaliser. Taylor’s spirit had enabled them to come back from 4-1 down. It had to go to penalties.

With Caldervale winning the toss Taylor would have to match their opponents kick for kick. After five penalties both teams had scored four. Sudden death penalties to follow. Caldervale’s player missed. In silence, as the pressure mounted, up stepped Anthony McGuinness. He calmly converted and was swarmed by his team mates. Victory!

Congratulations to all the boys involved in the match. A full season unbeaten in the League competition.
