Parents slammed for parking in driveways

Residents say Church Avenue jammed up by cars

- Ross Thomson

Parents at Newmains Primary were this week being urged to respect the residents of a nearby street as they take their children to school.

Neighbours in Church Avenue have hit out over parents parking along their driveways and jam the road up as they take their youngsters to school.

People say that a car park in Church Avenue is barely used by parents.

Community councillor Annie Paton raised the issue at the village’s latest meeting.

She said: “The car park there is never used and residents can’t get into their driveways because of parents taking their kids to schools; it’s nose to tail.

“How there hasn’t been an accident there I don’t know.

“By the time parents go and park up they could just take their kids to school.

“The car park was made for them and they should be using it.

“The residents in Church Avenue are demented with it.”

Earlier this year, Murdostoun police sergeant Ewan Alexander told members of the community council of the extent of car parking problems in Newmains.

Sergeant Alexander revealed that parking problems were the main source of calls to his officers and that there were a number of “hot spots” in the Murdostoun area.

A council spokesman said: “Inconsiderate parking around schools is a common problem in many areas, and we appreciate the concerns of residents.

“The council has placed advisory keep clear markings in front of the school, on driveways along School Road and on the junction of School Road and Church Avenue.

“There is also a nearby car park which parents are encouraged to use.

“Driveway markings are usually only recommended in locations where there is a high demand for short term visitor parking, driveways are infrequent on the road and may not be obvious, so these have not been installed on Church Avenue.”

Newmains Primary head teacher Scott Smith added: “We remind parents to park in a responsible manner when picking up and dropping off pupils at the school.

“This includes showing consideration for local residents.”
