St John’s Church on Thursday morning of last week was a sad morning as prayers were said to the late Grace Slater’s family who were in the congregati­on attending the service their mother enjoyed every week Grace s funeral took place on Wednesday of this week. The weekday service was taken by the church minister Rev Dr Elijah Obinna and included a short Communion and the singing of the favourite hymn Amazing Grace. The kettles on was a welcome place afterwards on such a sad morning for the Slater family. Charity presentati­on Another visit for Betty Kerr and family took place recently to the Glasgow Beatson Cancer Hospital. The Carluke family and friends have been raising funds for the hospital since Betty s husband Jim died in the hospital a few years ago. The family have an open house each year on a Saturday in July and the event has become so popular with donations and knitting handed in throughout the year .This year the total donated to the hospital reached £5000 making over £40.000 donated to the special Cancer Research programme that is in progress .The family were so grateful for the dedication and care given to Jim and wanted to do something that might help others in the future. Always stating this would be the last year already items and beautiful knitting are being handed in to assure next year s event will go ahead. Grace Notes St John’s Church youth choir attended the above Youth Conference in Bradford recently. The girls and Leaders are very grateful for the generosity and support of the St John congregati­on which helped make the trip possible. It was another fabulous few days of fun, worship, fellowship and a few tears seeing so many young people worship in different ways. The speakers were very uplifting and the music very loud which they all loved. Although the weather was not so kind to the young choir you can t keep a good team down and they took part in everything. Carluke Day Centre The winners for this week’s Thursday games afternoon are as follows: Whist – 1st J Muir 2nd A Nelson 3rd B. Wright. Dominos – 1st T Scobie 2nd F.Hill 3rd J. Burleigh The centre had another trip away on Tuesday of this week to Perth. Ceilidh dancing Fancy some Ceilidh dancing to keep you fit? Go along to St John s church hall every Wednesday evening 7.30pm and get in style and step with Neil Broadbridg­e – no partner needed. Street level The above Carluke youth centre is now in its twentieth year. Opened in 1998 in conjunctio­n with Universal Connection as an outreach centre by six of the Carluke churches acting together to meet and engage young people on the streets. Based in Stewart St the youth centre Of South Lanarkshir­e Council the aim was to give the young people of Carluke a safe place to develop and now 20 years later Street Level continues to provide a vital resource for many local young people including After School groups and Support for Young Carers supported by the churches and funding from Choices Charity Shop South Lanarkshir­e Council and in the past year the local branch of TSB as their sponsored charity. Two local businesses raised around £500 each thanks to The Wee Thackit and James Chapman Butcher. The Centre thank everyone for the support given in these past twenty years.
