Springhill duo net medals in Poland Lynn and Connie also meet in semi-final bout

- Michael Temlett

Springhill ABC boxers Lynn Calder and Connie Ramsay both returned from Poland with medals — despite clashing in the semi-finals.

The talented duo were representing Scotland in the International Silesian Women’s Championship in Gilwice fighting in the 60kg category.

After a tough run to the final, Lynn picked up silver after beating Connie in the quarter-finals, which resulted in a bronze for the former Judo Commonwealth star.

Connie started off with a walkover against a Russian opponent before facing Lynn in the semi- final in what was a competitive bout.

Lynn’s route started with a great performance against an Australian opponent which resulted in a first round stoppage.

After facing Connie, Lynn was up against former World Champion Mira Potkonin, from Finland, in the final.

In a tough contest, Lynn was outclassed in the later rounds after a strong start against the powerful Finnish puncher.

Springhill head coach Frank Delaney spoke of his pride and said: “For Lynn and Connie to both come back with a medal was brilliant.

“We knew at some point the two of them might meet but they met in the semi-final and put on a great fight.

“They know each other well because they’ve sparred hundreds of time together at the club.

“Before the fight, I was speaking to Lynn and she was saying that’s the most nervous she’s been and she’s fought former world champions!

“It was a great fight which Lynn edged but people forget Connie has only had two competitive fights and she didn’t look out of place at all.

“Lynn looked great in the opening fight and had the Australian rattled with a clean punch to the chin within a minute and it was all over.

“When we were flying back I said to both of them if you had been offered this a week ago you would have taken it.”

It was a great way for the duo to start off the new season with the Shotts scrappers heading for a Boxing Scotland camp next month.

Frank believes the Springhill club can go for an even more successful year than last.

The club scooped more than 20 medals and Frank said: “That’s always the aim, you want to get better and better. We’ve got some talented young boxers here and we’ll be looking to get a few more gold medals than last year.”
