This street should be safe for kids - not racing drivers

Parents blast region’s ‘David Couthards’

Speeding drivers are treating Overtown Main Street like a race track.

And furious residents claim it’s only a matter of time before someone is seriously injured or killed.

Niam Mohammed says he’s had two near misses in the space of 10 days as motorists surge past his home “like David Coulthard”.

Now he is demanding North Lanarkshire Council takes immediate action to prevent a tragedy on the road.

He said: “No-one seems to want to do anything about it.

“The bottom line is this: do the council want a statistic for something to be done about it?

“To me, North Lanarkshire Council stands for No Longer Care.

“David Coulthard would be proud of the speed these drivers are doing.”

Last year the Wishaw Press reported how Main Street resident Ken Struthers had written to councillors urging them to install speed cameras on the road.

Ken, who has lived in the Main Street for 40 years, said: “When you are crossing the road at eight in the morning you are taking your life in your hands.

“I sent a letter to Councillor Jim Hume a couple of weeks ago and I spoke to John Pentland when he was the councillor.

“Mr Pentland told me it would cost £ 80,000 to install speed cameras. I told him it would pay for itself.

“It’s not about the volume of the traffic, it’s the speed cars and lorries are travelling at.”

A council spokeswoman said that speeding is a Police Scotland matter.

She added: “All public roads within the council area are kept under review and annual programmes of work are established through this process.

“The council has been successful in reducing road injury accidents exceeding both local and national targets.”
