- S g Michael Temlett

Golden couples from across Wishaw and Shotts were among those celebrating a special milestone at a glittering celebration.

The husbands and wives, a all marking their 50th wedding anniversary this year, were among a total of 95 couples to attend a special afternoon tea arranged jointly by North and South L Lanarkshire councils.

As well as reminiscing a about their half-centuries of marriage, the happy couples danced the afternoon away to the sounds of the 60s, saw their wedding pictures beamed on to a giant screen and received commemorative gifts.

When the couples were married in 1967, Harold Wilson was Prime Minister, it was the year in which Celtic’s famous Lisbon Lions side won the European Cup, UK singer Sandi Shaw won Eurovision with Puppet on a String and The Beatles released acclaimed album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.

The couples share the big anniversary with celebrity couple Elivis and Priscilla Presley and the hit movies of 1967 included Bonnie and Clyde, The Graduate and The Dirty Dozen;

Provost Jean Jones said: “Golden weddings are very special occasions and bring back many happy memories for couples.

“Things have changed so much since 1967 but the one thing which has remained is these couples’ lasting commitment to each other.

“I congratulate every couple on their lasting commitment to each other and on reaching this milestone in their married lives.”
