Wishaw Press

Tip-top response

- Michael Temlett

North Lanarkshire Council has cleared up a site at which staff were caught fly-tipping.

Last week, the Wishaw Press reported that angry residents were fed-up with council vans dumping rubbish at the ground on Benhar Road, Shotts.

Pictures were taken by resident Derek Mcleod and council chiefs announced they would launch an investigation into the allegations.

After the Wishaw Press went to print, vans were pictured at the council-owned site, near Shotts Golf Club, clearing the rubbish left behind.

Derek, of Benhar Road, was pleased to see the local authority act after months of complaints.

He said: “It’s taken a while but it’s good to finally see them doing something about it.

“It’s good to see what a bit of pressure can do and I’d like to thank the Wishaw Press for their help.

“It was an eyesore for everyone who lived near it and reflected badly on us. We just want the area to look as good as possible.”

Last week, North Lanarkshire Council said they would take action on any worker who had been caught fly-tipping.

After an investigation was launched, Ken Forbes, head of environmental assets, said: “We received a report of fly- tipping in the area and asked a local grounds maintenance crew which was cutting grass nearby to remove a furniture suite from the roadside.

“Due to a lack of suitable vehicles in the area, and as a temporary measure, the crew took the suite to the site of the former Benhar Depot, which is an area of ground owned and maintained by the council.

“The material was left for longer than initially intended, however, it has now been cleared and the site has been secured.”
