New boss has high hopes for Newmains

- Michael Temlett

Newmains United’s new manager wants his side to shock Scotland’s Junior set-up – as he targets promotion.

The Victoria Park side announced Gary Millar as their new boss, who will be assisted by Craig Gupwell, and the 28-year-old vowed to bring in a new era for United.

Despite a poor start to the season which has seen Newmains fail to pick up a point from their opening six games, the management duo are hopeful of benefitting from the league reconstruction.

With a promotion spot on offer to the top four in the Central District Second, Millar insists his side will not be there to make up the numbers.

He said:“We’re here to shock teams and help put Newmains United on the map.

“The team have always been known as one of the worst Junior teams and we’re out to change that.

“The club seemed like a good fit because it’s a clean slate and we’re bringing in a lot of quality players we’ve been fortunate to play with at Junior and senior level.

“The league is being reconstructed at the end of the season and if you make the top

four you’ll get promoted. It’s not been a great start to the season but we’re only four points off those spots.

“That’s only four games we need to win and we’re here to change a lot of things about the club, from top to bottom.

“Myself and Guppie are young, fresh to the game but, most importantly, we’re ambitious.”

Newmains will take on Lanark United in their first game this Saturday and while Gary admits it will be a good chance to cast his eye over his squad, he is also looking to create some momentum.

He said:“Everyone can beat everyone in this league and it will be a good chance for us to look at who we’ve brought in.

“We could have seven or eight players signed by Saturday but we’ll be looking to try and get some points on the board.

“We won’t go into the game with tunnel vision, we’ll go in with our eyes open and have a look at the squad.

“We’re under no illusions that it will be a tough task but we’re looking at making it an exciting new era for Newmains and want people to join us for the journey.”
