MOTHERWELL LATEST ALLAN EYES GERS’ SCALP

Cup win would round off great fortnight

- Michael Temlett

Allan Campbell would love nothing more than to cap off a memorable fortnight with a win over Rangers.

The Motherwell midfielder has enjoyed a whirlwind start to the season, becoming a mainstay in Stephen Robinson’s side.

The 19-year-old’s top form helped earn him a Scotland under-21 call-up during the international break and a new four-year deal which he signed last week.

Now all eyes turn to Sunday’s Betfred Cup semi- final with Rangers and Campbell insists the Steelmen can grab a result against Pedro Caixinha’s side.

He said: “It’s been a brilliant few weeks, I’m glad the deal is done and I can focus on the football knowing I’m sorted long term.

“It’s good that the gaffer has signed long term as well and I think it shows you the way the club wants to push young players forward and I’m happy I’m here.

“There isn’t anywhere else I’d rather be than here and I think this is the best place for me to develop.

“You’re playing games, there’s experience in the squad and you’ve got the gaffer – this is where I can improve the most.

“It’s good that he trusts me and all I can do is repay him.

“We had a few days to rest and recover after the Hamilton game and then look ahead to the Rangers game.

“Hopefully we go out, impose our style and get a result.

“The atmosphere in the changing room is buzzing right now and if we take that into the game then hopefully we can do the business.”

Campbell knows competition is key to Well’s success and believes the strength of the squad helps drive everyone on.

Well lost 2-1 to Rangers at Fir Park on the opening day of the Premiership season but this time around, Campbell insists the team have more confidence.

He said:”There’s a good few boys on the bench pushing me for my place and I know I have to give 100 per cent or else I’ll get dropped.

“Competition is always key for a squad because it keeps everyone on their toes and you can’t go into the game relaxed.

“I know if I don’t do well then somebody will take my place next week.

“We’ve got two or three players in every position and there are boys on the bench who can come in and play which shows the depth of the squad.”

Well defender Peter Hartley is also ready to do battle with the Ibrox outfit this Sunday at Hampden. He said:

“I’m

be better than them at the back.

“We have spoken all week about the Rangers game. “We certainly won’t be going to Hampden just to make up the numbers. We are going there to try to beat Rangers.”
