Showcasing community

A community consultation will be held in Newmains with the aim of bringing more people into the NCT Centre.

A consultation day will be held on March 24 with a number of groups who currently use the centre invited to participate.

NCT manager Sandra Clements believes the consultation is an important step in bringing more people into the centre.

She said: “This will allow groups to showcase what they do.

“Last year the centre held a similar event and it went very well.

“We hope to do more of these. We have to keep opening the door to members of the community who don’t know much about the centre.

“Everyone seems to be on board and these events can benefit not only the centre but other groups within Newmains who attend.”

Speaking at last week’s Newmains Community Council meeting, Sandra also confirmed a youth consultation with primary four to seven children will also be held.

“We currently have three students on placement within the centre who are going to facilitate this study,” said Sandra.

“From our point of view the kids need to talk to the kids.

“We currently have more traditional youth groups within the centre but if there is demand for another group we will certainly try to do that.

“We want to be able to have more activities for the young people of Newmains and if they tell us what they want we can hopefully help them get it.”

Sandra added that the centre had also recruited a programme services manager with the aim of recruiting more volunteers and assisting existing groups that use the centre.

Newmains councillor Robert McKendrick gave his backing to the consultation plans.

He added: “For a long time people were simply given facilities and then they weren’t used as there was no demand for it.

“This is a much better way of doing things.”

Meanwhile the NCT Centre is hosting a Mother’s Day event on Sunday, March 11, from 5pm to 7pm.

The event will include a high tea, entertainment and a gift for your mum at a cost of £10.
