Church link is the dawn of new era
Craigneuk Church is set to enter a new era when it is formally linked with Belhaven Church tomorrow.
The two churches will be brought together in a Service of Linkage which will see Reverend Derek Pope being officially welcomed as the church’s new minister.
Ministers from across Motherwell and Wishaw, along with other dignitaries from The Church of Scotland, will also attend.
“While it is more usual for parishes to be linked with their closest neighbouring parish, there are many similarities between North Motherwell and Craigneuk and a considerable movement of people between the two areas,” Reverend Pope said.
“I am very much looking forward to this new challenge.
“There is often a gap between church and community and it is for the churches to journey out, joining their skills and resources with those of local people who for many years have worked for the good of communities like North Motherwell and Craigneuk.”
Derek Pope has been minister at North Motherwell for 23 years, and was convener of the Church of Scotland’s Priority Areas Committee until last year.
Over the years the church in North Motherwell, through its New Opportunities Project, has worked in partnership with St Bernadette’s Roman Catholic Church and local residents in developing a whole range of activities which have enriched the community there.
Reverend Pope added he is looking forward to getting to know the people and parish of Craigneuk and working in close partnership with St Patrick’s, schools and community groups. All are welcome to the service, which starts at 7pm at Craigneuk Street Church.
