Best young boxers bring back a host of medals
The region’s best young boxers brought back a host of titles from the Western Districts.
Held in the Ashgill Recreation Centre in Glasgow, clubs from Wishaw, Shotts and Cambusnethan all struck gold.
For Team Shire, 14- year- old Coltness lad Jay Kelly bounced back from his narrow defeat in the Scottish Intermediates by winning gold in the 57kg category.
Fellow Coltness scrapper Steven McCallum picked up his first title for the club, winning gold in the 46kg category.
Sixteen-year-old Sean Duddy, from Pather, picked up silver in the 60kg category, while Aidan Nicol, also 16, picked up a silver.
Coach Jack Parvin said: “Jay Kelly came back really strong and bounced back perfectly from the Intermediates.
“Steven picked up his first title with us so we’re really happy for him.”
Team Shire wish to thank sponsors Vincent McGovern Lawyers and DMC Car Wash for their continued support.
Springhill’s Reese Lynch, 16, lifted gold in the 60kg category – his fourth Western District title to date.
He overcame Euan Hamilton in the semi-final before beating Robert Hewitt in the final.
Coach Frank Delaney said: “I’m delighted for Reese. Hamilton had beaten him three times before so it was good to get one back on him in the semi-final.
“He was excellent in the final and thoroughly deserved to win on points.”
Also medalling for Springhill was 13- year- old Marcus Sutherland, who lost on points in the 38.5kg final, while Lewis Wardrop, 11, lost out in a very close semi-final on points.
For Cambusnethan Miners Boxing Club, Harley Boal picked up his second Western District title in a row via a first round stoppage.
Kieran Shepard and Ryan Haney picked up silvers. Coach Gerry Taggart said: “It takes guts to step into the ring and they all did themselves and the club really proud.”
