Willy hits rival for six
Former world amateur champion Willy Hutchinson continued his assault on the pro ranks with a comprehensive points win on Friday night.
The 19-year-old defeated Erik Mokonzo in London after winning all six rounds.
Hutchison, who remains a firm fixture at the Springhill Amateur Boxing Club in Shotts, also scored a knockdown on the Congolese warrior.
He remains undefeated with a record of 3-0 after appearing on the undercard of Olympic silver medallist Joe Joyce’s fight as part of the Hayemaker Ringstar show at York Hall in Bethnal Green.
Light-heavyweight Hutchinson said:“It was a good six rounds against a bigger opponent. He was tough and durable; it was okay.
“I felt I was rushing into things. It was my first six rounder.
“Sometimes I got a bit close to him but I got the job done.
“It doesn’t matter who is going to be put in front of me – I am going to win.”
The teenager, 19, flew out of the blocks with a series of ferocious punches.
The onslaught continued into the second with Hutchinson underlining his exciting potential, landing a barrage of heavy blows.
Yet Mokonzo stood firm and traded back in the third when he shook the teen with a fierce
jab to force a bloodied nose.
Hutchinson, backed by a lively Scottish contingent, recovered well and forced the referee to dock his opponent a point for holding on in the fourth.
Patience proved a virtue for Hutchinson as made a breakthrough to knock down the local Bethnal Green fighter in the fifth.
And Hutchinson eventually ended Mokonzo’s resilience to score a deserved, unanimous decision from the judges after six action-packed rounds.
Promoter David Haye said:“He won every round and won the fight convincingly.
“He is a masterful boxer but tonight (Friday) he wanted to show he could fight.
“He had a tear-up with a tough, durable opponent. I want to keep him busy this year. I want him to take his time and pick his shots.”
