For the second year in a row a Shotts student has been presented with a prestigious gong.

Mark Scott, who attends the City of Glasgow College, received the Montgomery Award for Wall and Floor Tiling from one of the oldest Livery companies in London, The Worshipful Company of Tylers and Bricklayers.

He was presented with a cash prize of £ 750, a gold medal and a framed certificate during a formal ceremony held in Trinity House in London.

Mark said: “It is a great honour for me to receive this award and it’s the culmination of an exciting few months.

“Taking part and winning gold in the WorldSkills UK Skills Show was a fantastic experience and one which I learned a great deal from. I am now training hard in order to try and secure a place in Team UK for WorldSkills Kazan 2019.”

The 20- year- old was one of 17 students who travelled to Birmingham’s NEC for the 2017 WorldSkills UK Skills Show. He took gold in wall and floor tiling, helping City of Glasgow College secure the overall top spot in the WorldSkills UK competition.

Principal and Chief Executive at City of Glasgow College, and WorldSkills UK Lead Ambassador for Scotland, Paul Little, said: “Mark’s achievement is remarkable and I’m delighted that his hard work and dedication has been recognised by this significant accolade.

“At City of Glasgow College, we aim to equip each student with the hard and soft skills they will need to excel in the world of work.

“Skills competitions play a crucial role in improving standards in industry, and winning a gold medal at the WorldSkills UK Skills Show demonstrates how well prepared Mark is to embark on his chosen career.”

In recognition of his success at the UK Skills Show Mark, who attended Calderhead High School, received a cheque from his employer and was invited to the Scottish Parliament to meet Airdrie and Shotts MSP, Alex Neil, who described him as “a talented and high achieving young man with a bright future ahead of him.”
