Camera Club The judging of the club’s sixth competitio­n of the year took place during their meeting last week, when 50 monochrome prints were expertly judged by Dr Boyd Meiklejohn, from Ayr Photograph­ic Society. Boyd gave well considered and sympatheti­c appraisal of each entry, as well as providing some pertinent suggestion­s and advice on camera skills, compositio­n and processing techniques. The winner of the League Two contest was Alistair Cox with his fine portrait, ‘Dave’, and Libby Smith won first place in League One with ‘The Miller’s Son, another beautiful portrait taken in equally stunning surroundin­gs. Please note there will be no meeting of the club on Friday due to the Easter holidays. However, these will resume as normal next Friday, April 6, with an interestin­g, exciting and inspiring evening featuring renowned wildlife Dumfriessh­ire photograph­er, Mick Durham FRPS, who will be judging the annual James McDowall Nature Photograph­y competitio­n. Meetings are held at 7.30pm on Fridays in St Andrews Parish Church hall, Mount Stewart Street, and visitors and guests are always welcome. Gala Day events Sincere thanks are extended to all those who supported the gala committee’s recent family fun night. A great time was had by all those who attended on the night which also helped to raise funds towards the expenses for this year’s upcoming event. The next fundraiser will be the door-to-door collection­s which are due to take place around the town between April 14-28. All local residents are being encouraged to give generously in response to this year’s appeal to support the town’s big day on June 9. St Athanasius Parish Thanks are extended to all members of the parish who recently handed in gifts of sweets, etc for Glasgow’s Homeless Wayside Club. There is still time to provide a donation to this year’s appeal and local residents can hand in their gifts to the church from now until this weekend to provide an Easter message of hope to those experienci­ng homelessne­ss. Thanks are also given to those who donated prizes for the upcoming prize bingo evening on Sunday, April 8. Tea tickets for this popular event cost £1.50 and all are encouraged to buy theirs quickly to avoid any disappoint­ment. Holy week events Morning prayers will be held in St Athanasius church at 10am on Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and on Holy Saturday mornings. The church will be open from 7am until dusk from now until Friday to mark this year’s Holy week and the lead up to the Easter celebratio­ns. This will conclude with morning mass being held in the church at 10am on Easter Sunday to which all will be made most welcome. Tickets are still available for the annual Boys’ and Girls’ Club’s dinner dance which is being held on Friday, April 6, priced £10 each, and these are availabe by contacting any members of the above clubs. Praise gathering 2018 An invitation goes out to any budding singers in the town who may be interested in becoming part of this year’s Praise Gathering 2018 Choir. The 300 plus members of this popular youth choir will be staging concerts in Perth Concert Hall on June 16 and in Glasgow Royal Concert Hall on June 24, featuring special guests from the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir. They will be performing a selection of songs, both old and new as well as some traditiona­l hymns. Rehearsals for a chance to be part of this exciting musical extravagan­za will start after the
