Council HQ revamp branded ‘ridiculous’
Ina Lawrie Michael Radigan Tom Horton Nikki Musgrave Readers blast £330k Civic Centre refurb
Can’t justify it Get priorities right Absolutely ridiculous It’s diabolical
Last week the Wishaw Press revealed that council bosses are set to spend more than £330,000 on upgrades to their headquarters at the Civic Centre in Motherwell.
The works, to allow senior members to move from the ground floor to the first and fifth floors, include office layout alterations, heating and redecoration works, refurbishment of the toilets and improvements to a shower area.
We went out to speak to our readers to see what they thought of the spending in light of recently confirmed budget cuts.
Nikki Musgrave, from Bellshill, said: “If people in Wishaw are going to foodbanks, how can they justify spending that much on something like that? It’s diabolical. They should be spending that money on local communities. I understand cuts have to be made but this is just not justifiable.”
Ina Lawrie, from Wishaw, said: “I think it’s an absolutely awful use of public money. There are offices closing and jobs going everywhere at the moment. How can they justify this now?”
Wishaw man Michael Radigan said: “It’s an absolute abuse of public money. There is always something better to spend the money on and this is just another one of those where they haven’t got their priorities right.”
Tom Horton, from Wishaw, said: “It’s absolutely ridiculous and it’s very hard to swallow at a time like this. They could have spent that money much more wisely.”
