DIRTY OLD TOWN

Wishaw Press - - FRONT PAGE - Ross Thomson

A Wishaw man has blasted the state of the town’s alleys and back courts which are littered with empty booze cans and syringes.

Central Wishaw Community Council secretary Alan Love contacted the Wishaw Press after filling three black bags’ of empty beer cans and broken bottles.

Alan’s photographs show a pile of empty cans of strong cider and lager and bottles of Buckfast wine, cider and vodka in the back court behind Specsavers. He also snapped a number of syringes, spoons and drug paraphanalia.

Alan also noted a three-piece suite dumped behind Stewarton Street and tyres dumped at the entrance to the close into Caledonian Road.

Alan said: “We can’t have this right at the town centre. It’s an eyesore and we have to see action on this and quickly.

“Historically this has been a problem. When you look behind these areas it has become a dumping ground for all sorts of mess.”

Last year, a Wishaw Press investigation lifted the lid on the eyesore areas behind the Main Street which had become a magnet for fly-tipping and vandalism with bags of rubbish, broken glass and other items dumped.

At that time calls were made to tackle up to a dozen drinking and drugs dens in and around the town centre.

Alan added: “There have been steps taken to tackle this problem.

“There’s been a lot of mess cleared in and around Lannigan’s Court; that has been a real improvement. However, in other areas where nothing has been done. People will keep going there to drink and do drugs until the council and the police do something about it.”

In response, a council spokesman said: “Landowners are responsible for the removal of litter on their land.

“Many of the back courts affected by antisocial littering in the Wishaw area are in private ownership and there is an ongoing issue with private landowners and businesses failing to deal with litter problems on the ground they own.

“We work in partnership with Keep Scotland Beautiful to help any private landowner and any community organisation interested in clearing litter from private sites.”
