She said: “The NHS, like any other organisation, is facing workforce challenges. However, NHS Scotland’s workforce is at a record high with more than 140,000 whole time equivalent staff. Upwards of 44,000 qualified nurses and midwifes were employed by NHS Scotland as of 31 December 2017, which is an increase of 7.6 per cent since September 2006.

“There will always be an element of agency staff used within the NHS. However, the Scottish Government are working hard to reduce reliance on agency staff by increasing the NHS staff bank network.

“The staff bank is a pool of appropriately trained NHS employees, on NHS contracts at NHS rates of pay, who can provide temporary cover for short term absences.

“The Scottish Government have also committed to delivering an additional 2,600 extra nursing and midwifery training places by 2021 and these extra staff will help reduce the reliance on agency staff.

“One of the biggest concerns going forward is the uncertainty over the status of EU nationals working in the NHS.

“BMA Scotland have confirmed that Brexit ‘poses a substantial and serious threat to the future of the NHS workforce’.

“It is disappointing that a year out from Brexit, the UK Government still haven’t provided clarity on the status of EU nationals working in the NHS.”
