Cycle stars saddle up for return to our streets
Tour Series in town
Britain’s leading televised cycle race series will return to Motherwell in May.
The nation’s best riders will head north of the border for the second round of this year’s OVO Energy Tour Series.
They will be in Motherwell on Tuesday, May 15, and this is the fourth time they will have raced around the streets of the North Lanarkshire town.
Councillor Allan Graham, convener of North Lanarkshire Council’s enterprise and housing committee, is delighted top class cycling is returning to the town.
He said: “North Lanarkshire is delighted to welcome The OVO Energy Tour Series back to Motherwell for the fourth year.
“It is an excellent opportunity to see world-class cycling up close, with the top teams in Britain competing around our streets.
“During the day local school children can also enjoy a lap of the circuit, which we hope will inspire them to be active and get on their bikes.
“We look forward to an exciting day of racing and fun on May 15.”
The OVO Energy Tour Series is unique, as the focus in both the men and women’s competition is on the teams, who battle for the overall title based on the performance of all five of their riders in each event.
The Tour Series has grown over the past few years with some of Team GB’s best riders taking part.
These include Britain’s most decorated Paralympian Dame Sarah Storey who brought her own team, Storey Racing, to the town and Scotland’s Katie Archibald, fresh from winning gold at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.
Olympic champion Katie also spoke to around 200 pupils from Ladywell, Logans and St Bernadette’s Primar y Schools about her career in the sport and took time to answer their questions.
