A Motherwell mum who shed eight stone loves playing hide and seek with her five kids – because she can now squeeze into tight hiding places she would never have fitted into before.

Back in January 2015, Angela Stewart tipped the scales at 21st 12.5lbs.

Husband Derek was also overweight.

But when he was diagnosed with fatty liver disease, it spurred Angela into action and she joined Anne Hogarth’s Slimming World group at Motherwell Baptist Church.

“I knew he would never go to a class, so I thought I would go and we could both follow the plan at home,” explained Angela, of Muirhouse.

“We needed to do something. It is not a great lifestyle for the kids to be brought up with a mum and dad who are massive.”

When at her heaviest, Angela reckons she was wearing a dress size 28 but admits it was hard to be sure because all her clothes had elasticated waists.

But Angela’s determination to take control and slim down paid off and last week she was presented with an 8st award – she now weighs a healthy 13st 12.5lbs and is wearing stylish size 14 clothes.

She is also just 3st away from reaching her target weight of 10st.

On the day she picked up her award, Angela received another boost when a health visitor arrived to carry out her one-year-old daughter’s assessment.

“I opened the door and shocked her! She said: ‘Well, hello skinny minny’. I felt great,” said delighted Angela, 41, whose husband has also lost 2.5st since she joined the group.

“I went to group every week through my pregnancy with Holly and of my five pregnancies, I enjoyed this one the most.

“I felt healthy and happy. I didn’t suffer from the same problems with this one as I had with the four boys, as I had already lost so much weight.

“I lost 2st at my first weigh- in after Holly was born. I have gone from strength to strength since.

“Before, I felt sluggish, bloated and drained. I can’t put into words how differently I feel.

“I even played hide and seek with the children recently and the places I could hide that I could never hide before was surprisingly quite emotional for me.

“I love running around with the kids, rolling on the floor. It feels like I have given myself a real fun life with my family.

“My husband who suffers from ill health has also lost weight and is doing amazing.

“The kids love Slimming World food and, even better, I’m not the biggest mum at the school gates!”

Angela’s weight loss has been so dramatic her 13 year- old son didn’t recognise her in a picture taken four years ago. “It has changed my life and I’ve made so many friends at the class,” enthused Angela.

“We all socialise together and, as like-minded people, we all know what we can eat and drink when we go out. It’s great fun.”

Angela attends the group at Motherwell Baptist Church at 5.30pm on Thursdays.
