Ceremony marks the Class of 2018 Achievements of Hall of Famers celebrated
The North Lanarkshire Sporting Hall of Fame has welcomed eight more inductees.
The incredible sporting achievements of athletes from across the area were celebrated at a special ceremony at Ravenscraig Regional Sports Centre.
The latest inductees include former WBO world flyweight boxing champion Pat Clinton, Scotland’s most capped footballer Pauline Hamill and footballer Jimmy Quinn, who won six league championships and four Scottish Cups with Celtic in the early 20th century.
Rounding off this year’s inductees were ultra marathon runner James Stewart, Paralympic skiier, rower and athlete Scott Meenagh, Great Britain wheelchair rugby captain Michael Kerr, karate star Kirsten Bonar and Scottish Volleyball CEO Margaret Ann Fleming.
Speaking after the announcement, Michael Kerr said: “To be included in the North Lanarkshire Sporting Hall of Fame is a huge honour for both myself and my family.
“It’s really incredible when you see the other names who have been inducted and what they have achieved in their sporting careers.
“I hope my inclusion can inspire others – whether able-bodied or disabled – to give sport a go and enjoy competing, no matter the level.”
The latest inductees join other sporting greats and legends, such as Sir Matt Busby, the Wizard of Wishaw John Higgins, the Lisbon Lions, including Craigneuk’s own Tommy Gemmell, Ricky Burns and David Crabb who were inducted into the inaugural Hall of Fame last year, when North Lanarkshire became the first local authority in Scotland to honour its sporting heroes in such a way.
Council leader Jim Logue said: “The reason for creating a Sporting Hall of Fame in North Lanarkshire is to inspire future generations, and I’m certain that everyone visiting Ravenscraig will look at the large, colourful panels along the main corridor and realise the singleminded determination it takes to achieve sporting success.
“This year’s eight inductees are truly inspiring people and I’d like to congratulate each of them on their incredible achievements. I’m sure their families and friends are rightly proud of their inclusion among our finest sports people.”
Anyone who wants to go and see the North Lanarkshire Sporting Hall of Fame can do so free of charge by visiting the Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility.
