Events plan for centre use

- Ross Thomson

NCT Centre youth and community development teams have held a number of consultations with villagers.

The purpose was to listen to the community to find out what they thought should be available in the centre.

Maryanne McCafferty, a c t i v i t y p ro g ramme development manager, was pleased with the event and told the Wishaw Press that plans are already in place to put some of the suggested ideas into action.

She said: “All the events have been well supported with some really good ideas coming from the community.

“We will be launching the summer activity scheme for young people incorporating many of the suggestions they put forward, such as robotics, video game design, sports, music and drama to name a few.

“The programme launch will be on June 23 in the centre.

“There will be a craft fair and family fun day with a barbecue, music, and bouncy castle starting at 11am.

“Everyone is welcome to join in the fun.”

C h i l d ren living in Newmains have already had their chance to have their say on the future of the NCT Centre.

Pupils from Newmains, St Brigid’s and Morningside Primary Schools gathered at the centre to give their thoughts on what activities and groups they would like to see at the centre in the future.

Maryanne added: “The community consultation produced some really interesting ideas too, with suggestions such as carpet bowls, salsa dancing, cookery classes and yoga.

“We are already sourcing group leaders and equipment for these.

“The walking group has started now and is on a Thursday morning leaving the centre at 11am. Everyone is welcome as long as people arrive for 10.45am to register and meet the walk leaders.”

“The youth group led by the young people is on a Tuesday, at 6pm, for kids aged eight and over.

“Come along and enter the competition to name the group with vouchers for the winning suggestion.”
