LEE PUTS TEAM ON TOP TIER

Wishaw squad’s top scorer helps them clinch promotion and league title prize

Wishaw High School Former Pupils have celebrated an incredible season which saw them scoop the league title and clinch promotion.

The side won the league for the second time by six points from their nearest rivals Gartcosh United, earning promotion to the Central SAFL Premier Division in the process.

The win is exactly seven years on from the club lifting the Scottish Amatuer Cup, and completes a huge turnaround after nearly folding two years ago.

Assistant manager Patrick Crawley said: “This is the second time the club have won the league and it’s been exactly seven years since the club won the Scottish Amateur Cup.

“The club was nearly going out of existence two years ago, due to poor performances and not getting enough players to attend games meaning having to pull players in every week - including committee members.

“The club will now play in what is regarded as the best amateur league in Scotland.”

Wishaw High School Former Pupils are run by a group made up of three committee members; Davie Muir, secretary Gavin Torrance and Gus Boyle.

Manager Harry Hadden is assisted by Crawley and Tam Mader as coaches.

Crawley added: “This is the first year myself, Harry and Tam have been involved in the club and we decided to strip it back to the bare bones and promote some youth players.

“Namely, Lee Hadden who scored 29 goals and has just scooped our player of the year and top goal scorer.

“He was the catalyst behind us winning the league.”
