Wishaw pub’s World Cup promotion splits opinion

A Wishaw hotel has laughed off claims that it is antiEnglish.

An advertising board on the side of the Commercial Hotel has the World Cup trophy along with the phrase #anyonebutEngland.

But the sign prompted a furious response from Central Wishaw Conservative councillor Bob Burgess, pictured, who demanded owners Manorview Hotel Group remove it before tomorrow’s big kick off. He said: “As councillor for Wishaw, I am embarrassed that we have a full- size advertising board in a prominent site on Wishaw Main St reet stating #anyonebutEngland. “What does this billboard advertise? The World Cup? No. Not in my opinion.

“This board shows that Anglophobia and anti- English sentiment is alive and well in Scotland and is universally accepted under the guise of friendly banter with the Auld Enemy.

“The people of Wishaw have progressive values, are caring, tolerant and are welcoming to all. This sign does the people of Wishaw a disservice.
