There was plenty of fun in the sun as New­mains cel­e­brated its lo­cal gala day.

This year’s Gala Queen Olivia Neil­son was crowned in front of fam­ily and friends as hun­dreds more en­joyed the glo­ri­ous sun­shine be­fore the heav­ens opened later in the af­ter­noon.

Ear­lier in the day the colour­ful pro­ces­sion made its way through the streets with ev­ery­thing from clowns to Lit­tle Bo Peep be­ing part of the pa­rade.

New­mains Gala Com­mit­tee sec­re­tary Mary Gil­fil­lan said: “We had a smash­ing day. There were no hic­cups and every­one en­joyed them­selves.

“The rain didn’t come on un­til 4pm so we couldn’t ask for much bet­ter.

“All the kids in the court had a great time. We had a lot of pos­i­tive feed­back from the chil­dren and their par­ents.

The gala day brought an end to New­mains Civic Week.

Events in­cluded foot­ball, the Brains of New­mains quiz night, a kids tal­ent show and in­flat­a­bles.

Mary added: “The good weather helped us and all the events were well at­tended.

“We had 13 teams for the Brains of New­mains and over 90 kids at the foot­ball.”
