Service demands to serve communities

Quids in after win on lottery

- Ross Thomson

A Cleland councillor has met with First Bus in a bid to improve transport services in the village.

The SNP’s Cameron McManus discussed the service with bus company bosses to seek improved night and Sunday services for passengers.

Currently, services cease operating after 6pm on weekdays but the Murdostoun councillor is hopeful an improved service can be achieved if SPT agree to fund it.

Councillor McManus said: “We are aiming to get a better Sunday and night service for Cleland.

“The 241 bus only goes up to Coltness rather than going the extra five minutes up the road.

“I am trying to arrange a meeting with SPT with the aim of getting a better service.

“The last bus going up to Cleland from Motherwell is at 6pm with the last bus leaving the village at 6.20pm.

“I have discussed two or three options with First Bus. If we can get one of them it would dramatically improve the service.”

The issue of bus services in Cleland has been raised by Councillor McManus since he was elected back in 2017.

The councillor was left furious after several complaints from residents informing him that passengers had to walk up to two miles in the snow after First Bus drivers said the 241 service to Cleland would terminate in Coltness due to the bad weather.

This prompted First’s business director Duncan Cameron insisted customer safety was the company’s number one priority.

First Glasgow commercial director Graeme Macfarlan said: “We had a positive meeting with Councillor McManus and agreed to jointly raise the issues with SPT to see if there was a way to improve the services on offer for Cleland in a co-ordinated and cost effective manner.” Two people in Cleland received a welcome financial boost after winning the People’s Postcode Lottery’s Daily Prize.

The Main Street winners will see their bank account boosted by a fantastic £1,000 each thanks to the win.

Offering his congratulations, People’s Postcode Lottery ambassador Danyl Johnson said: “Well done to those who picked up a prize in Cleland today.

“There’s nothing nicer than seeing neighbours win together and I hope they both enjoy spending their prize!

“Sign up with your postcode and you could be winning next.”

A minimum of 32 per cent of ticket sales goes directly to charities and players of People’s Postcode Lottery have raised £310 million to date for 4,000 good causes across Great Britain and internationally.

Sense Scotland is one good cause close to the winners that has benefited from player’s support and received £18,958 in 2016 to create a sensory garden.
