Triathlon heroes rake in the cash

Three generations of a Carluke family went the extra mile for a cancer charity when they took on a sponsored triathlon.

Anita Bennie has been fundraising for the last seven years for Maggie’s Centre in memory of her pal Ann Graham who lost her battle with cancer in 2011.

And this year, her husband Gary, son Michael and seven- year- old grandson Brandon all decided to get involved to support her ongoing efforts.

“I’m very proud of them all, especially Brandon,” Anita said.

“I don’t know where the wee one got his energy from. Gary and Michael were both worried about him because it was a long way and a lot of it was uphill.

“But he never gave up and did it all so well. He even had the energy to kick a football around the same evening!”

Starting from their home in Carluke, the trio went on a threemile run through Braidwood to the Station Inn.

From there they picked up their bikes from Anita and took on a three- mile cycle to Shotts Leisure Centre.

Then it was on to 100 lengths of the pool, with Brandon managing an impressive 1,325m in the water.

Anita said: “The people of Carluke came out of their houses to support them and wave them around which was amazing.

“My daughter also carried out a sponsored 10K walk recently around Carluke and I just couldn’t be prouder of my family.

“We’ve raised around £600 already this year, and that’s before the big match on Saturday.”

Anita Bennie organises the Ann Graham Memorial Fun Day every year and has raised more than £13,000 to date so far.

That has come from the matches and a host of other fundraising efforts, including a sky dive and a 400ft abseil.

She recently undertook her latest challenge - a bungee jump at Pitlochry - while gearing up for the match which takes place this Saturday at Moor Park.

As well as the football there will be stalls, kids rides, face-painting and much more.

The event will continue into the night as at 7pm at Castlehill Bowling Club there will be an auction, raffle and disco.

There will also this year be a host of celebrity soap stars appearing including Anthony Quinlan from Emmerdale, Dean Fagan from Coronation Street and Taylor Dawson and Jamie Lomas from Hollyoaks.

Evening tickets cost £20 and the remaining few are still on sale now. Call Anita on 07738688709 to buy.
