The time is right to Tri out a new sport
Aspiring athletes have the perfect opportunity to try out the triathlon on the offical Glasgow 2018 course at Strathclyde Park.
The Glasgow 2018 European Championships, in partnership wi t h Triathlon Scotland, have launched the event to introduce people to the sport.
Held on Sunday August 12, it will be packed with activity for those that have never tried the three triathlon disciplines – swimming, cycling and running – all together, as well as a host of familyfriendly attractions.
New competitive races will be held throughout the day, including a mini GO TRI event for adults who are new to triathlon involving a 300m swim, 5k bike ride and a 1.5k run.
Sports Minister Aileen Campbell said: “Our ambition is to get more people physically active and Glasgow 2018 offers an opportunity to encourage people to live healthy and active lifestyles.
“This summer, Tri in the Park is a fantastic opportunity to get involved in the sport of triathlon and for people to try a new activity for the first time.”
There will also be a family relay where the child takes part in an open-water swim and two adults complete the event with a cycle and run.
There is also an aquathlon which involves swimming and running; a duathlon which sees participants run, cycle and then run again; as well as races aimed at existing young triathletes age 11 to 14, and short distance routes for novices and existing triathlon enthusiasts.
Councillor Michael McPake, convener of infrastructure at North Lanarkshire Council, said: “This is a fantastic chance for people to try out triathlon in Strathclyde Country Park.
“We know that our communities will support the athletes taking part in the Glasgow 2018 European Championships and Tri in the Park will be a great day of participation and fun in a world-class venue.”
Tri in the Park will follow three days of elite and age group triathlon action as part of the European Triathlon Championships which will be hosted in Scotland for the first time at the new multi-sport event, Glasgow 2018.
Entries are now open for the Tri in the Park event and start at £10.
Places across each race are limited, although some places will be available for entry on the day.
