The time is right to Tri out a new sport

As­pir­ing ath­letes have the per­fect op­por­tu­nity to try out the triathlon on the offical Glas­gow 2018 course at Strath­clyde Park.

The Glas­gow 2018 Euro­pean Cham­pi­onships, in part­ner­ship wi t h Triathlon Scot­land, have launched the event to in­tro­duce peo­ple to the sport.

Held on Sun­day Au­gust 12, it will be packed with ac­tiv­ity for those that have never tried the three triathlon dis­ci­plines – swimming, cy­cling and run­ning – all to­gether, as well as a host of fam­i­lyfriendly at­trac­tions.

New com­pet­i­tive races will be held through­out the day, in­clud­ing a mini GO TRI event for adults who are new to triathlon in­volv­ing a 300m swim, 5k bike ride and a 1.5k run.

Sports Min­is­ter Aileen Camp­bell said: “Our am­bi­tion is to get more peo­ple phys­i­cally ac­tive and Glas­gow 2018 of­fers an op­por­tu­nity to en­cour­age peo­ple to live healthy and ac­tive life­styles.

“This sum­mer, Tri in the Park is a fan­tas­tic op­por­tu­nity to get in­volved in the sport of triathlon and for peo­ple to try a new ac­tiv­ity for the first time.”

There will also be a fam­ily re­lay where the child takes part in an open-wa­ter swim and two adults com­plete the event with a cy­cle and run.

There is also an aquathlon which in­volves swimming and run­ning; a duathlon which sees par­tic­i­pants run, cy­cle and then run again; as well as races aimed at ex­ist­ing young triath­letes age 11 to 14, and short dis­tance routes for novices and ex­ist­ing triathlon en­thu­si­asts.

Coun­cil­lor Michael McPake, con­vener of in­fra­struc­ture at North La­nark­shire Coun­cil, said: “This is a fan­tas­tic chance for peo­ple to try out triathlon in Strath­clyde Coun­try Park.

“We know that our com­mu­ni­ties will sup­port the ath­letes tak­ing part in the Glas­gow 2018 Euro­pean Cham­pi­onships and Tri in the Park will be a great day of par­tic­i­pa­tion and fun in a world-class venue.”

Tri in the Park will fol­low three days of elite and age group triathlon ac­tion as part of the Euro­pean Triathlon Cham­pi­onships which will be hosted in Scot­land for the first time at the new multi-sport event, Glas­gow 2018.

En­tries are now open for the Tri in the Park event and start at £10.

Places across each race are lim­ited, al­though some places will be avail­able for en­try on the day.
