Drinker’s car shame

A boozed-up woman got be­hind the wheel of a car and ran over a man’s foot.

Char­lene Dalziel was more than three-and-a-half times the le­gal drink-drive limit when she mounted the kerb in Mother­well’s Bell­shill Road.

The 2 6 - y e a r- o l d ap­peared at Hamil­ton Sher­iff Court last week and pleaded guilty to a to­tal of five charges against her in re­la­tion to the in­ci­dent which took place on Au­gust 14.

Dalziel ad­mit­ted tak­ing a car with­out the con­sent of the owner and driv­ing the ve­hi­cle de­spite only hav­ing a pro­vi­sional li­cence, hav­ing no qual­i­fied driver with her and not dis­play­ing L Plates.

She also pleaded guilty to driv­ing with­out in­sur­ance.

Dalziel drove the car with­out due care and at­ten­tion, whilst un­der the in­flu­ence of al­co­hol and with­out shoes.

The car then mounted the kerb, col­lided with other road users and a fence be­fore Dalziel drove over the man’s foot.

A breath test showed the ac­cused had 84 mi­cro­grammes of al­co­hol in 100 millil­itres of breath.

The le­gal limit is 22 mi­cro­grammes.

Dalziel was cleared of two charges re­lat­ing to leav­ing the scene of an ac­ci­dent.

Sher­iff Ray Sma l l de­ferred sen­tence on Dalziel, of Bell­shill Road, Mother­well, un­til Novem­ber 29 and called for a range of re­ports to be pre­pared for her next ap­pear­ance in the dock.

The ac­cused was dis­qual­i­fied from driv­ing in the in­terim pe­riod.
