Library date for authors

Crime writer James Oswald and local author Thomas Welsh will both give talks at Wishaw library as part of Book Week Scotland.

James will visit this Tuesday at 7pm to talk about The Gathering Dark, his latest novel in the Detective Inspector Mclean series.

Award-winning fantasy and short story writer Thomas will then return to “the library that helped to inspire him” next Thursday, November 22, to talk about his book, Anna Undreaming.

He told the Scottish Book Trust: “I grew up in Wishaw, [which] had a great library [and] it still does. The library made me what I am today – what I am is a writer.”

The festival will also see writer and broadcaste­r Stuart Cosgrove visit Motherwell library to talk about latest instalment of his soul trilogy, Harlem 69: The Future of Soul. It follows on from the success of Detroit 67 and Memphis 68, his earlier titles chroniclin­g black American music and its social context.

Free tickets for the 7pm event are available at Motherwell Library and early booking is advised.

The same venue will also host a week-long travelling exhibition entitled Going to the Pictures, put together by the National Library of Scotland.

Motherwell’s other events are a family history session at 10.30am on Monday and a craft event showcasing the library’s yarn bombing project at 1.30pm the same day. There will then be a family quiz at 1pm on Saturday, November 24, and a storytelli­ng session of Scottish tales at 2.45pm, suitable for ages three and up

Newarthill library will have a session on using e-book service Borrowbox at 11am on Monday. The same event will take place at New Stevenston library at the same time next Friday, November 23.
