Man jailed for earlier assault on former lover

Wishaw Press - - SHERIFF COURT - Court Reporter

A Wishaw security boss has been jailed for the second time for carrying out a campaign of terror against a former lover.

Graham Lang, 47, was put behind bars for 42 months after he pinned the woman down while holding a knife to her throat.

Lang accused his 32-year-old victim of being unfaithful.

The former security firm area manager told the woman he would maim her sister if she had been cheating.

He pinned her down and had sex with her despite her protests before dragging her outside to a shed and throwing hammers at her

He had earlier been jailed at the High Court for five years for a vicious assault which saw the woman leap from a window to escape in 2012.

But she bravely told police about an earlier attack in 2009 and he was arrested days before he was due to be freed.

Lang went on trial at Hamilton Sheriff Court where he denied assaulting the woman with intent to rape at his former home in June 2009.

But he was convicted by a jury and jailed by Sheriff Douglas Brown.

The woman told the jury how she had been left terrified by the brute.

Giving tearful evidence from behind screens, she said: “It started when he came in from work and he had been sitting reading everything on my phone and accused me of cheating.

“He said, ‘I knew you were a slapper but I can’t believe you have done this to me. You are going to feel the pain I feel’.

“He dragged me downstairs and told me to sit down on the floor and said I was getting the chance to tell the truth and if I didn’t he was going to slit my sister’s throat.

“He went and got a block of kitchen knives and pressed the blunt side against my neck before he tried to strangle me because he didn’t believe me.”

She added: “He took me outside and told me to stand with my back against the wall and if I didn’t flinch he knew he could trust me.

“He then started flinging hammers at my head and when I did flinch he said he had to throw some more which clipped my head.

“We then went back into the house and he asked if I wanted a cup of tea.

“Even though it was nearly 10 years ago I still have flashbacks about what he did, I thought I was going to die.”

Lang denied all wrongdoing and said, while he regretted assaulting her in 2012, the earlier incident had not happened.

He said: “I don’t think I was a very pleasant person to be around in 2012 and I’m sorry every day for what I did to her but what she is saying happened just didn’t.

“Nobody had ever accused me of assaulting her with intent to rape until I came out of prison, it just isn’t true.”

Advocate Geoff Forbes, defending, said: “There is nothing I can say about the offences other than he will have to accept the verdict of the jury.

“It is his intention on return to prison to engage in the education facilities and to emerge to make a fresh start.”

Sheriff Brown said: “You will appreciate that because of the seriousness of the offence a substantial period of imprisonment is necessary.”

Lang was placed on the sex offenders’ register indefinitely. .
