Cops probe taxi crash

An investigat­ion is underway after a man was rushed to hospital after crashing a taxi which was reported as stolen from a Wishaw street.

The incident, which took place in the early hours of Thursday morning, saw police receive informatio­n that the vehicle had been taken from Cambusneth­an Street in Wishaw.

Officers then traced the car to the Bellside roundabout.

However, the driver then sped off, crashed into a barrier on the dual carriagewa­y and overturned.

A police spokespers­on said the man was rushed to hospital in the aftermath of the crash.

His condition was at first described as serious but at the time of going to press had been confirmed as stable.

The spokespers­on continued: “At around 3.15am on Thursday, November 22, police received a report that a taxi had been stolen from Cambusneth­an Street in Wishaw.

“A short time later the vehicle was seen in a stationary position near Bellside roundabout in Newmains.

“As officers approached the vehicle it made off and crashed into a barrier, causing it to overturn.

“Emergency services attended and the male occupant of the car was taken to University Hospital Wishaw.

“An investigat­ion into the circumstan­ces is now underway and the matter has been referred to the Police Investigat­ions and Review Commission­er.”
