Spruced up war memorial

Villagers help with the work

- Ross Thomson

A band of Overtown villagers have been hard at work upgrading the village’s war memorial.

Members of Over town Brighter Village Association, along with local councillor Bob Burgess, Overtown and Waterloo Community Council and members of the village friendship group have planted and placed wrought iron soldiers for the centenary year of the end of hostilities and got the memorial cleaned up.

They also received help from Brookside Garden Centre and Clyde Valley Plants.

Nancy Campbell Ker, from the brighter village association, said: “We thought it a fitting commemoration to remember those men who did not come home to refurbish the cenotaph in Overtown.

“Today we cannot imagine what these families went through but some residents of both Overtown and Waterloo can remember talk of grandparents not returning or returning with the destruction of war hanging over them.

“Some were even killed after the ceasefire.”

In order to give a little back to the fallen heroes, brighter village association members Rhys Townsend, Barry Ker and Ami Ker did a sponsored walk of some of the West Highland Way and raised £915.

All funds raised were going to the charities Poppy Scotland and Help for Heroes.

Nancy added: “I cannot imagine what my life and my family would be like, if the brave men and women that went to war and have fought for our freedom had not succeeded in giving us the life we now have.

“I cannot thank them enough for their endeavours.

“I had the privilege of attending Overtown Churches Remembrance Day and the concert they had the night before with photos and information of some of these men from both World Wars.”
