Higgins’ Open is over

-

John Higgins’future remains in the balance after thewizard of Wishaw suffered a shock third-round defeat at the Scottish Open.

After speaking openly about his deliberation over whether to quit the sport, the four-time world champion hit a stunning 147 in his second-round victory over Gerard Greene.

The 43-year-old then took on world No. 95 Alfie Burden in the third round.

Higgins went down 4-2 at Glasgow’s Emirates Arena - having led 2-1.

World No.4 Higgins admitted he was contemplating retirement after a disappointing defeat at last week’s UK Championship.

Losing to Burden for the first time in a major tournament will have done little to lift Higgins spirits – who admits he is lacking form and motivation to practise.

After making his maximum break, the Wishaw sporting legend said:“you can’t get better than that.

“I got a great ovation from the fans at the end, the crowd were brilliant.

“I think that’s the first time this year I’ve had a buzz since theworld Championship final.

“I’ve not been feeling great, but to get the maximum is a great feeling.thankfully I feel a lot better about my game, which is great.”

Higgins will hope to get more consistency when he heads to Alexandra Palace for the Dafabet Masters , which starts on January 13.
