Newmains turnaround picks up points

-

With the new Newmains manager duo beginning to shape their squad, the side finally picked up their first win of the year in dramatic fashion.

In September David Ross’ injurytime header saw them win their first league game in over a year as undefeated Ashfield were toppled 2-1.

It got better for the rejuvinated side though as victories over Saltcoats Victoria and Ardeer Thistle saw Newmains rack up three league triumphs in a row for the first time in three years.

Davies and Gupwell had transformed the side from basement dwellers into a competitive outfit.

Perhaps their finest result though was the trip to Championship side Whitletts Victoria in the West of Scotland Cup.

Newmains secured a fantastic 0-0 draw in Ayrshire before emerging victorious on penalties as new keeper Martyn Meek made his mark in dramatic fashion.

If there was a result which encapsulated the club’s rise from the ashes, it was that one.

The club’s wonderful Christmas advert was a PR masterstroke, with the video reaching over 30,000 people online.

Newmains fell on hard times earlier this year but by the end they’ve struck gold and now boast a positive bank balance with no debt.

They have also managed to welcome children to games free of charge to try and boost the club’s following in the village.

Enjoying one of the most successful periods the club has seen in recent years, Newmains hope to experience more success on and off Victoria Park in 2019.
