Readers take aim at ‘ridiculous’ rail fares

The introducti­on of yet another increase in average train fares in Scotland has been widely criticised amid falling performanc­e levels.

The average increase of 2.8 per cent has caused uproar among regular users and commuters across the country, with many feeling the service is going backwards.

We went out on the streets in Wishaw to see what rail users felt about the growing prices.

Tracy Mccarron, from Overtown, said she thought the prices were unfair on people who use the train frequently in a bid to reduce their carbon footprint.

travellers whose prices have gone up so much.”

Lorraine Rowan, from Harthill, said she wishes she could get a train from the village and feels prices are sky high already.

She said: “We aren’t even getting the service we need in Harthill. It is ridiculous what they’re charging for trains now.”

Olivia Hill, from Wishaw, said the experience should be better if Scotrail were charging more.

She said: “The prices really shouldn’t be going up if the service isn’t getting any better.”

Emma Mcneish, also from Wishaw, added: “I try to avoid the train if I can because they’re usually rubbish.

“There’s hardly any seats on them.”
