Signing up for a successful season

-

Newmains United are ready to roar after sealing a sponsorship deal with the owner of Glasgow Tigers’ speedway and making three new signings.

Gerry Facenna has agreed to personally back the Victoria Park side this season.

The successful businessman got involved after seeing the club rev up last term then commit to forming a youth academy over the summer.

On the pitch attacker Brandon Fallon, centre-half Ross Wilson and full- back Allan Halliday have been added to the squad.

Facenna - who also has Allied Vehicles under his stewardship – said: “I’d watched what was going on at Newmains and it struck a chord with me with regards to getting kids into football.

“Newmains are bringing in youth teams under their umbrella and I felt it was a good club to be associated with.

“They have a real bunch of sensible people running things and I think it is going to be great for this area.

“It resonates with the way I like to do things in business. The people in charge there have done a lot of work in a short space of time.

“Rather than talking about things there has been actual action. We have been doing similar things with the Glasgow Tigers and hopefully this deal can be mutually beneficial to all parties.”

Co-manager Paul Davies believes Facenna’s involvement proves how much progress has been made since he and fellow co-boss Craig Gupwell took charge last year.

On the park they picked up 18 points after finishing on zero 12 months earlier while off it they have developed an academy for budding media stars.

The new youth football academy has Under-21s and 2007s sides attached to it for the coming season too.

Davies said: “We are extremely grateful and honoured to have Gerry sponsoring us.

“Last season was a really good one as we put down the foundations at the club.

“Bu t w i t h G e r r y ’ s i nvolvement and the introduction of our Under-21s and 2007s sides this could be an exciting time to be a part of Newmains.”

Davies and Gupwell have also been busy in the transfer market, with their Mcbookie League Two campaign getting underway at home to Saltcoats Victoria this Saturday.

But Gupwell insists it isn’t the end of the arrivals with
