Toe ulcer led to amputation for Wishaw woman

An angry dad burst into his former partner’s bedroom at her Cambusnethan home and stabbed her new boyfriend.

Scott Hamilton’s ex fled in terror to a neighbour’s home as he accused the man of “trying to take my weans off me”.

Hamilton, 28, a prisoner, was jailed for 16 months at Hamilton Sheriff Court on Friday.

He admitted punching and stabbing his victim repeatedly to his injury at the house in Cambusnethan Street on March 14.

Hamilton also admitted offending while on bail and breaching bail conditions by contacting his ex.

Jennifer McLaren, prosecuting, said Hamilton and his ex had been together for five years, but separated some time ago. They have two young children.

The woman began seeing her new man in February this year.

The fiscal stated: “The couple were chatting in bed around 3am when they heard Hamilton shouting outside.

“He entered the house via an unlocked door and ran upstairs to the bedroom.

“The accused directed comments towards (the man), saying ‘You’re trying to take my weans off me’.

“He ran towards him and punched him several times on the head and face.

A Craigneuk gran was horrified when doctors said they’d have to amputate her leg.

Liz Penman was taken to hospital with a suspected ulcer in her foot.

But the 54-year-old was left stunned when surgeons told her that she’d contracted Sepsis and she would have to lose the leg to save her life.

The experience hit the gran-of-four hard.

She said: “Everything happened so fast, I didn’t really have time to think about it.

“I went into Hairmyres and got my toe taken off but unfortunately Sepsis has set in so the leg was then amputated below the knee.”

The popular Morrison’s worker added: “I’m just trying to live my life as best I can.”

Her daughter Nicki told the Wishaw Press that her mum was an “unbelievably positive” person. ●

neighbour’s house and phoned the police.

“(The man) restrained the accused on the floor, but then released him.

“Hamilton went to the kitchen and returned with a knife. He brandished it and told (his victim) he was going to ‘plug’ him.

“He then struck him on the chest in a slashing movement.

“The victim held up his hands to defend himself and suffered another cut to his left hand. Fearing for his life, he punched and kicked the accused, eventually disarming him and running from the house.”

Ms McLaren said Hamilton fled the scene but was arrested nearby.

His victim suffered multiple cuts, but these were superficial and he did not need hospital treatment.

Defence agent Laura Kiernan said Hamilton has a problem with alcohol and also mental health issues.

She told the court: “Alcohol had been taken, he got something in his head and went there.

“He is normally a hardworking man who lives for his children.”

Sheriff Thomas Millar said it was a serious matter and prison was “inevitable”.

He told Hamilton: “It’s fortunate that no significant injury was caused. An appropriate sentence is 24 months, but I’ll reduce that to 16 months because of your guilty plea.”
