Legends will be on the ball again

- Ross Thomson

A huge football fundraiser in Shotts has been rescheduled after falling victim to the coronavirus pandemic.

A team of Rangers legends were due to take on a Shotts select side at Hannah Park in June, with all of the proceeds being split by Wishawbased suicide prevention charity Chris’s House and St Andrew’s Hospice.

However, the game has had to be postponed due to lockdown restrictions.

Event organiser Stuart Thomson has confirmed the match has now been rescheduled for next year.

He said: “With the ongoing uncertainty around Covid and football fans getting into stadiums, I’ve just agreed with the committee at Shotts Bon Accord that it’s too risky to try and confirm the rematch for this year.

“So, subject to some form of normality returning, we aim to hold the rematch on the weekend of May 22 next year.

“It may be the Saturday or possibly the Friday night again.

“We will confirm nearer the time as it’s dependent on a number of factors including when Rangers play that weekend, after the split.

“Those who have booked prematch hospitality, which sold out very quickly, and pay to plays, mascots, sponsors, will be contacted much nearer the time to confirm plans, with us adhering to any new rules that may apply due to Covid.

“If anyone has pre-paid for anything, including match tickets and wants a refund please arrange this with myself or whoever you bought the match ticket from.

“Any match tickets from the original date will be honoured.

“Fingers crossed we can proceed in the new year, have a great day and raise lots of money for these two phenomenal local charities.”

Last year’s match raised thousands of pounds in memory of Stuart’s brother Gordon, who died after a short battle with cancer.

Former Ibrox stars such as Alex Rae, Marvin Andrews, Charlie Miller, Colin Hendry, and Nacho Novo laced up the boots, with defender Andrews being taken to hospital following a nasty clash of heads.
