There was also contract extensions for defender Charles Dunne and midfielder Robbie Crawford, who had his contract at Livingston terminated so he could complete a permanent move to Fir Park after joining on loan in the summer.

Fans also breathed a sigh of relief as the window slammed shut with midfield talisman Allan Campbell and skipper Declan Gallagher remaining at the club.

‘Well received substantial bids for Campbell during the window, but these were rebuffed by Fir Park chiefs.

Motherwell have stated they are “engaged in positive talks with O’Donnell about the possibility of extending his deal beyond the current campaign” and gaffer Alexander was thrilled with his deadline day business.

He told the club website: “We’re delighted

Stephen is staying with us.

“When I took the job, the first target was to hold on to our best players. We’ve achieved that in this window with all of the squad.

“I look forward to continuing to work with Stephen for the remainder of the campaign and hopefully beyond.”

New signing Nolan started his career in the English Premier League with Blackburn Rovers and was loaned out to Stockport County, Hartlepool United and Preston.

A permanent move to Preston led to further loan spells at Sheffield Wednesday and Scunthorpe United followed, leading to a move to The Iron.

And Alexander is very familiar with the defender, who has three caps for his country, given his spell down south.

He added: “Eddie is a vastly experienced defender and we’re glad to have him.

“I’ve faced him many times with my previous teams and know what he will bring.

“He can slot in anywhere across the back four, giving us good competition across all the defensive line.”

The first of Motherwell’s new recruits was winger Roberts and he makes the step up to the Premiership having made 11 outings for Hearts this term.

All players are set to be in the squad for tonight’s Premiership clash at home to Dundee United. ‘Well were idle at the weekend and go into it looking to build on last midweek’s 2-1 win at Ross County that ended a run of 13 games without a win and provide Alexander with his first win as gaffer.

On Saturday a trip to face an out of form Celtic awaits the Steelmen.
