Fire alarm a hit for Sadie Marie

- BY MICHAEL PRINGLE

A Lanarkshire entertainer has been doing her bit to combat climate change.

Singer songwriter Sadie Marie’s latest single This World is on Fire was released as part of her involvement in a project for COP26 – Climate Sisters: Local Women of the World.

The solo artist, who grew up in Law near Wishaw, has been signed to Scottish label Hijacked Records since she released her debut single Lonely Lover in 2018.

She was back playing the live circuit with a support gig at Room 2 in Glasgow last week.

Proceeds from the single during COP26 have been donated to the Women’s Environmental Network (Wen UK) and Gilded Lily Inspiring Enterprise CIC.

Now settled in Rutherglen, Sadie Marie’s music draws influence from the old-timey, folk, Americana sounds of artists such as Neil Young, Valerie June, Joni Mitchell, and Townes Van Zandt, and has previously been referred to as a “one-woman First Aid kit”.

She told Lanarkshire Live: “This World is on Fire and its video reflect issues of climate change and climate justice focusing on landfill waste and throw-away culture. I wanted to release this single as a way to use my voice to raise awareness of these issues.”

The song’s lyrics were inspired by a poem by Alex Laird about climate change and how humans treat the world.

The single has already received a great response having been featured on BBC Radio Scotland’s Afternoon Show and the video will be presented in future exhibitions with the Climate Sisters.

Its founders recognised that the environmental movement often overlooked the perspectives and voices of women.

Wen has been working closely with two women’s groups, from Manchester and Glasgow, to produce creative pieces which reflect their thoughts, feelings and views on climate change.

Sadie Marie has played a number of notable shows and venues and performed for audiences abroad in the Netherlands and Canada.

Sadie released her debut self-titled EP in early 2020, and during lockdown she was part of a number of live stream gigs including Gigs in The Gaffs for Discovery Music and a 23 Promotions and Immersive TV gig filmed live from Room 2.

The singer/songwriter returned to the stage at Room 2 last week as support act to alt-rock cellist and singer Calum Ingram.

This World Is On Fire music video can be viewed on YouTube and Sadie Marie’s single can be purchased via Bandcamp.
