More control needed over rent payments

- GREGOR FARQUHARSON

Scottish Green MSP Gillian Mackay has called for rent controls after a rise in payments in North Lanarkshire.

New statistics published by the Scottish Government show that between 2010 and 2021, the average rent for a two-bedroom property in the region increased by 13.7 per cent.

In 2010, the average rent for a two-bedroom property was £455 per month, compared with that of £517 in 2021.

Average payments for other sized property have also increased across North Lanarkshire in the past 11 years, with rent for a threebedroom property in 2010 costing £549 now standing at £600 in 2021 – an increase of 9.4 per cent.

And there was a huge increase of 22.6 per cent in four-bedroom properties across the region.

It is a similar picture across

Scotland, with the average rent for a two-bed property rising from £554 in 2010 to £693 in 2021, a huge increase of 25.1 per cent.

This has l ed Central Scotland Green MSP Gillian Mackay to call for tougher rent controls to help stop the rise.

The MSP told the Wishaw Press : “Many of my constituents in North Lanarkshire, along with tenants across the country, have faced eye watering rent rises in recent years.

“We simply cannot leave something as fundamental as people’s homes to market forces.

“That’s why I am so proud that the Scottish Green Party will bring rent controls back to Scotland as part of a fair deal for all of the country’s renters.”
